A 73-year-old electrician has been convicted of sexual crimes against a former Class 8 student in Navua and is scheduled to be sentenced next month. This case comes to light after a series of legal proceedings led to the final conviction of the accused, who was previously known in the community as someone who repaired electrical appliances and had even visited the victim’s home.
The incidents took place when the victim, now 17, entered the accused’s vehicle while waiting at a bus stop. Once they arrived at a village, the accused utilized a tape measure on her before taking nude photographs and engaging in sexual acts. The victim later recounted feeling compelled to comply out of fear of the accused and bravely disclosed the events to her mother on October 16, 2023.
Initially facing multiple charges, the accused was acquitted of two counts of rape due to a lack of evidence during the trial. However, he was found guilty of two counts of rape and one count related to pornographic activities involving minors. He was also convicted on a reduced charge of indecent assault, while being acquitted of one sexual assault charge.
Justice Usaia Ratuvili presided over the hearings and affirmed the importance of addressing such serious offenses, particularly those involving minors, highlighting the necessity for thorough judicial processes to safeguard vulnerable individuals. The sentencing for the convicted individual is set to occur on July 1.
This case echoes the ongoing challenges faced regarding sexual offenses and the legal measures in place to combat them. It serves as a critical reminder of the need for vigilance in protecting young people from such predatory behavior and the importance of judicial accountability in holding perpetrators responsible.
Overall, such legal outcomes can foster hope for better protection for minors and promote awareness surrounding the safety and rights of individuals in similar situations.
