Transparency International in Papua New Guinea has raised concerns about the potential for another electoral disaster in the upcoming 2027 elections. The organization highlighted the lack of corrective measures following the numerous failures experienced during the 2022 elections and previous electoral processes.
The watchdog notes that the 2022 elections were marked by significant violence and identified as possibly the worst in the country’s history. Over two decades of election oversight have led TIPNG to conclude that there are serious flaws in how elections are managed and conducted in Papua New Guinea.
In their assessment, TIPNG pointed out several critical issues from all stages of the electoral process, including inaccurate electoral rolls, insufficient enforcement of election laws, Constitutional non-compliance, disruptions during vote counting, and widespread election-related violence exacerbated by the availability of firearms.
A Special Parliamentary Committee convened after the 2022 elections proposed 70 recommendations to parliament a year ago; however, these suggestions remain unaddressed. TIPNG’s chair, Peter Aitsi, emphasized the importance of a structured electoral planning cycle that requires consistent support and resources throughout the years leading up to elections. With 2027 just two years away, he urged the Electoral Commissioner and the government to take serious and immediate action to protect the integrity of the electoral process.
One key concern is the recent 2025 budget, which did not increase funding for the Electoral Commission, compromising its ability to prepare adequately during non-election years. This funding deficiency poses a substantial risk to the integrity and effectiveness of the 2027 elections.
Comments: It is crucial for the leaders of Papua New Guinea to recognize the urgent need for reform in the electoral process. Citizens deserve a fair and transparent election system that reflects their democratic rights. Engaging in open dialogue and implementing the necessary changes can pave the way for a more stable and secure election environment in the future.
Summary: Transparency International in Papua New Guinea warns of the potential for another problematic election in 2027 due to unresolved issues from the 2022 elections. Key concerns include inadequate electoral preparation, persistent violence, and insufficient funding for the Electoral Commission. The organization stresses the need for immediate actions to safeguard the integrity of elections in the country.
