The Electoral Commission has released its Audited Financial Statements for the 2024 financial year, revealing the composition of its members and the allowances they received. According to the report, members of the Electoral Commission are appointed by the Office of the President, with a total of seven commissioners serving three-year terms, alongside a designated chairperson.
During the reported financial year, Barbara Malimali briefly held the position of Acting Chairperson from August 1 to August 15, 2023, earning an allowance of $1,000. Subsequently, she was confirmed as Chairperson, a role she held from August 16, 2023, through July 31, 2024, for which she received an allowance of $10,000.
The report also lists other commissioners and their allowances: Ateca Ledua received $2,500; Nenami Mati was paid $11,000; Ratu Inoke Dokonivalu Loganimoci earned $10,500; Nalini Singh received $8,000; and Reginald Jokhan was allotted $10,000. Additionally, Atu Emberson Bain was appointed as a commissioner from August 16, 2023, to July 31, 2024, with an allowance of $9,000.
Despite some missing documentation regarding the exact dates of appointment and resignation for certain commissioners, the Commission remarked that this issue had no significant impact on its operations or financial statements. The termination of Malimali’s chairmanship occurred at the end of the financial year, in August 2024, as confirmed in the report.
This transparency demonstrates the Commission’s commitment to accountability and governance, even in the face of challenges regarding record-keeping. As the Electoral Commission continues to navigate these operational issues, it remains focused on its critical mission of upholding democratic processes.
