The situation surrounding Barbara Malimali has become increasingly complex, as Ana Mataiciwa, the Supervisor of Elections, has filed a police report against the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Submitted on November 28, 2024, this report alleges serious misconduct, including abuse of office, intimidation, and harassment of witnesses related to an ongoing Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe into Malimali.

This incident unfolds as Malimali’s recent appointment faces close examination from a Commission of Inquiry. The CID is currently looking into claims of misconduct during her previous role as chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).

In her response to questions regarding her complaint, Mataiciwa explained that her decision to act followed multiple notices from the Secretary to the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) and the Chief Registrar’s Office, which requested her responses to allegations made by Malimali. Mataiciwa pointed out that Malimali’s actions were particularly concerning given her position as a key witness in the CID investigation, suggesting that they constituted intimidation and harassment.

Additionally, Francis Puleiwai, the former Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, has also filed a complaint against Malimali for allegedly misusing her powers to issue a stop-departure order earlier this year. This case has similarly been forwarded to the CID for investigation.

While these developments indicate a turbulent legal landscape, they also highlight the commitment to accountability and integrity within governmental operations. The ongoing investigations underscore the importance of transparency in public service, which may reinforce public trust in the electoral process and its oversight mechanisms in the future.

Overall, this situation underscores the complexities of governance and the critical need for ethical standards in public office as the investigations continue.
