Election Uncertainty: Will Ratu Wiliame Katonivere Secure a Second Term?

Spread the love

President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere is poised to begin his second term in office at the end of this month. The Parliamentary Business Committee has scheduled a session for Parliament to convene on October 31 at 11 am to appoint the President.

Sources indicate that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has nominated Ratu Wiliame for the position. Initially, Parliament was set to nominate and appoint a President on October 3, with this matter listed as the fourth item on the agenda for that sitting. However, the agenda was deferred following Mr. Rabuka’s indication of a potential disagreement surrounding the presidential nomination.

In light of this, Mr. Rabuka formally asked the Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, to withdraw the item concerning the presidential nomination, mentioning certain reservations about the process. The Opposition has not yet disclosed their nomination plans.
