Ana Mataiciwa, the Supervisor of Elections in Fiji, has lodged a police complaint against Barbara Malimali, the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). The complaint was submitted on November 28 to Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew and alleges serious offenses, including abuse of office, intimidation, and harassment of witnesses.

Chew has confirmed the receipt of the complaint and indicated that investigations are currently in progress. This development is connected to a broader inquiry being conducted by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) regarding Malimali’s conduct. Additionally, Malimali’s appointment has come under scrutiny from a Commission of Inquiry, while the CID is also looking into allegations linked to abuse of office during her previous role as Chair of the Electoral Commission.

It appears that the investigation is part of ongoing efforts to ensure accountability and integrity within Fiji’s electoral and corruption oversight systems. For now, the situation remains fluid, and FICAC has yet to provide a statement on the matter.

This unfolding story highlights the commitment to transparent governance in Fiji, showcasing the mechanisms in place to address allegations of misconduct. It’s a reminder of the importance of upholding ethical standards in positions of authority, which ultimately fosters public trust in governmental institutions.
