The ongoing Barbara Malimali case has intensified with Supervisor of Elections (SOE) Ana Mataiciwa filing a police report against the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). This report, lodged on November 28, 2024, with Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, contains serious allegations of abuse of office, intimidation, and harassment of witnesses, particularly related to an active investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) concerning Ms. Malimali.
This escalation comes at a critical time as Ms. Malimali’s appointment is under examination by a Commission of Inquiry. Concurrently, the CID is investigating alleged misconduct during her time as chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).
In a response to media inquiries, Ms. Mataiciwa explained that her decision to file the complaint followed requests from the Secretary to the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) and notices from the Chief Registrar’s Office that addressed complaints raised by Ms. Malimali. She highlighted that Ms. Malimali’s actions, especially her attempts to question her role as a witness, constituted intimidation given the circumstances of the ongoing investigation.
Adding to the complexity of the case, former Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Francis Puleiwai, has also brought charges against Ms. Malimali, claiming she misused her position to implement a stop departure order earlier this year. This matter has also been handed over to the CID for further inquiry.
This situation underscores the importance of transparency and accountability within government agencies and positions of authority. As investigations progress, there is hope that the truth will emerge, ensuring justice and the integrity of the electoral process are upheld.
Overall, this case highlights the critical balance that must be maintained between power and accountability in public service, emphasizing the need for thorough investigations into any allegations of misconduct while respecting the legal rights of all parties involved.
