The situation surrounding Barbara Malimali has reached a critical point as Ana Mataiciwa, the Supervisor of Elections, has filed a police report against the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). The report was submitted on November 28, 2024, to Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, with allegations of abuse of office, intimidation, and harassment directed at witnesses.

This report comes amid a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) inquiry concerning Ms. Malimali herself. Her appointment is currently under scrutiny from a Commission of Inquiry, while the CID is also investigating claims of misconduct during her time as chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).

Upon confirming the report’s existence, Mr. Chew stated that investigations are actively ongoing. Responding to inquiries, Ms. Mataiciwa revealed that her decision to pursue the complaint was influenced by notifications received from the Secretary to the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) and the Chief Registrar’s Office regarding complaints led by Ms. Malimali.

Ms. Mataiciwa emphasized that Ms. Malimali’s actions, particularly given her role as a significant witness in an ongoing investigation, constituted intimidation and harassment. Simultaneously, former Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Francis Puleiwai, has also filed a complaint against Ms. Malimali, alleging misuse of power in relation to a stop departure order issued earlier this year. This case has also been referred to the CID for further investigation.

Efforts to reach Ms. Malimali for a comment were unsuccessful at the time of publication.

This unfolding situation highlights the complexities of public office and the accountability mechanisms in place. As investigations progress, there remains hope for clarity and resolution, reinforcing the commitment to upholding integrity within electoral processes and public service in Fiji.

In summary, the recent allegations and counter-allegations amid ongoing investigations illustrate a critical juncture for the officials involved. It underscores the importance of transparency and accountability, which can ultimately lead to reforms that strengthen the institutional framework in Fiji.
