Election Promises Under Fire: Where’s the Municipal Vote?

Opposition MP Parveen Kumar questioned the government in Parliament regarding the delay in holding municipal elections, which were promised to occur within the first 100 days or six months following their election. He pointed out that Fijians were assured of these elections and had placed their trust in the government by voting for them. Kumar labeled the government’s failure to fulfill this commitment as a “total lie” and noted that it contradicts the Electoral Act 116 (4C).

In response, Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa stated that local government elections would indeed take place. He expressed frustration over Kumar’s question, highlighting that it had been posed in a previous session when Kumar was absent. Nalumisa reiterated that the local government elections would be conducted, although he did not specify a timeline.
