Opposition MP Parveen Kumar questioned the government regarding the commitment to hold municipal elections within the first 100 days or six months. He raised this issue while discussing the Rakiraki Town Council Annual Report for 2019 in Parliament. Kumar noted that Fijians were promised municipal elections before and during the elections, which led people to trust the government and vote for them. He emphasized, “I ask, where is that promise? In fact, it was a total lie. It is also against the Electoral Act 116 (4C).”
Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa responded, stating that “the local government election will be held.” He remarked on Kumar’s audacity to ask about the local government elections, mentioning that the question had already been addressed in a previous sitting when Kumar was absent. Nalumisa reiterated, “The local government election will be held.”
