Parveen Kumar, an opposition member of Parliament, questioned the government about the delayed municipal elections during a discussion on the Rakiraki Town Council Annual Report for 2019. Kumar pointed out that Fijians were assured during elections that municipal elections would occur within the first 100 days or at least within six months, highlighting the electorate’s trust at that time. He expressed frustration, stating, “I ask, where is that promise?” and accused the government of misleading the public, citing a violation of Electoral Act 116 (4C).

In response, Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa affirmed that “the local government election will be held.” He criticized Kumar for questioning the timing of the elections, noting that Kumar had missed a previous sitting where this issue was addressed. Nalumisa reiterated his commitment to the elections, insisting, “I tell you; the local government election will be held.”
