Election Promises Under Fire: What’s Delaying Municipal Votes?

Opposition MP Parveen Kumar has raised concerns in Parliament about the unfulfilled promise of holding municipal elections within the first 100 days or six months of the current government’s term. Speaking during the discussion of the Rakiraki Town Council Annual Report for 2019, Kumar emphasized that Fijians were told during the election campaign that these elections would occur promptly, leading to their trust and votes for the government.

Kumar criticized the government, stating, “I ask, where is that promise? In fact, it was a total lie. It is also against the Electoral Act 116 (4C).” He suggested that the Attorney-General should investigate the matter.

Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa responded by assuring that the local government elections will take place. He expressed surprise at Kumar’s query, noting that the question had been addressed in a previous session of Parliament when Kumar was absent. Nalumisa reiterated, “I tell you; the local government election will be held.”
