The Coalition Government’s commitment to investigate the vote-counting ‘glitch’ that occurred during the 2022 General Election in Fiji remains unfulfilled two years later, leaving many Fijians without clarity. Ana Mataiciwa, the Supervisor of Elections, has highlighted that despite preparations for the upcoming 2026 elections, there have been no clear directives from Justice Minister Siromi Turaga regarding the investigation into this incident.

The glitch, which occurred on December 14, 2022, during the counting of votes, led to confusion and concerns when incorrect vote tallies were relayed due to data transmission issues. Former Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem, had indicated that this malfunction caused a distortion in the results received by some candidates, leading to mistrust in the election process, as expressed by Sitiveni Rabuka, the then-leader of the People’s Alliance party.

Mataiciwa has repeatedly called for a detailed report on the matter, urging the government to address the concerns of various stakeholders, including political parties, candidates, and voters. “Two years have passed since the elections, and many stakeholders want updates on this matter,” she stated. Furthermore, issues regarding the proper storage of ballot boxes ahead of the next election were also noted, indicating logistical challenges at the Fijian Elections Office (FEO).

In related developments, Minister Turaga, speaking at a cybercrime forum, acknowledged the ongoing nature of the investigation, stating that it is still under review and discussions with the Electoral Commission continue. He expressed a desire for further meetings to advance the findings before briefing the Cabinet, after which a complete disclosure to the public can occur.

This protracted investigation sheds light on the complexities involved in electoral oversight and underscores the significance of transparency. While the ongoing nature of the inquiry may be frustrating for many, it also represents an opportunity for the FEO and the government to enhance the integrity of future elections and restore public trust in the electoral process. As the situation evolves, there is hope that a comprehensive resolution will arise, fostering a more reliable electoral framework in Fiji.
