Ana Mataiciwa, the Supervisor of Elections, has lodged a police complaint against Barbara Malimali, the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). The complaint, submitted on November 28 to Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, accuses Malimali of abuse of office as well as intimidation and harassment of witnesses.

Chew has confirmed receipt of the complaint and indicated that investigations are currently in progress. This complaint is tied to an ongoing inquiry being conducted by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) regarding Malimali, particularly as her appointment is under review by a Commission of Inquiry. Additionally, the CID is also examining claims of abuse of office during Malimali’s previous role as Chair of the Electoral Commission.

FijiLive has made attempts to obtain comments from FICAC regarding this matter.

This situation highlights the ongoing scrutiny and regulatory challenges within Fiji’s electoral and anti-corruption systems, reminding citizens of the importance of transparency and accountability in governance. Although these developments may appear concerning, they also present an opportunity for necessary reforms and improvements within public institutions.

In summary, the complaint against Malimali adds another layer of complexity to an already fraught situation, underscoring the need for rigorous investigations to uphold integrity in public office.
