Fiji’s Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa, has lodged a police complaint against the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Barbara Malimali. This complaint, filed on November 28 with Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, accuses Malimali of abusing her office, as well as intimidation and harassment of witnesses.

Chew has acknowledged the receipt of the complaint and confirmed that an investigation is currently underway. This complaint comes in the context of an ongoing inquiry by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) looking into Malimali, as her appointment is under scrutiny by a Commission of Inquiry. Additionally, the CID is examining allegations of misconduct during Malimali’s previous role as Chair of the Electoral Commission.

FijiLive has reached out to FICAC for further comments regarding the situation.

This situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Fiji’s electoral and anti-corruption bodies and underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in governance. As investigations proceed, there is hope that these proceedings may lead to more robust systems to uphold integrity in public office.
