Anita Devi, a 60-year-old widow from Nacilau in Tuvu, Lautoka, has been left in fear following a traumatic home invasion that occurred on May 28. After living in her home for 40 years, Ms. Devi found her sense of security shattered when four masked men allegedly broke in through a window shortly before midnight.

During the harrowing two-hour ordeal, the intruders stole a variety of items, including bottles of gin, mobile phones, jewelry, and cash given to her by family members visiting from Australia. The criminals also took a TV and cleared out her pantry, taking groceries and frozen goods. “They took some of my husband’s tools and shoes. I don’t think they are from here because everyone here knows me,” Ms. Devi stated, expressing her disbelief at the violation.

In a chilling account of the incident, Ms. Devi described how the attackers bound her wrists and feet with wire, leaving her incapacitated on the floor. She managed to loosen the bindings around her legs and sought help from her neighbors, but faced obstacles as one neighbor initially refused to assist because he was tired. Fortunately, another neighbor eventually helped her.

Following the incident, Ms. Devi reached out for community assistance, seeking a safe place to stay, fearing that the perpetrators might return. Local police have confirmed they are investigating the matter, with Senior Superintendent of Police Iakobo Vaisewa urging the public to come forward with any information.

This incident comes amid growing concerns regarding the safety of elderly residents in Fiji, especially following similar attacks on vulnerable individuals in recent months, including a violent robbery of an elderly woman in Labasa. These events have prompted public calls for better protection and security measures for the elderly community to prevent such traumatic experiences from recurring.

Addressing the situation, authorities have emphasized the necessity for community vigilance and cooperation in enhancing safety for all residents. There is hope that this incident can lead to increased awareness and protective measures, thereby fostering a more secure environment for those who have dedicated their lives to the community. As investigations continue, it is hoped that justice will be served and that communities will come together to support their vulnerable members.
