Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran has expressed deep concern regarding a violent attack that recently occurred in Labasa, targeting an elderly couple in their home. This incident, described as “completely unacceptable” by Ms. Kiran, has raised alarm bells about the increasing vulnerability of senior citizens to violent crime.

The attack took place on Monday at Kawakawa Settlement in Waiqele. One of the victims is in serious condition and currently receiving treatment at Labasa Hospital, while the other is recovering at home. This incident serves as a troubling reminder of the need for community vigilance and support to protect the elderly.

In her statement, Ms. Kiran emphasized that those who commit such acts will face the full force of the law, underscoring the obligation of society to respect and safeguard its elder members. “Older people deserve to be treated with respect and live in peace,” she remarked, calling attention to the societal duty to instill respect for elders in younger generations to prevent such occurrences.

The ministry, along with law enforcement, is committed to enhancing safety for the elderly through various programs focused on social protection and healthcare. Citizens, particularly the youth, are encouraged to cultivate a culture of respect, compassion, and care towards their senior family members.

In parallel, police spokesperson Ana Naisoro provided updates on the ongoing investigation. It has been reported that a man allegedly broke into the couple’s residence, assaulted them, and stole money, highlighting a worrying trend of similarly violent incidents targeting elderly individuals in the region.

In light of these events, community leaders and authorities are calling for increased measures to bolster safety for vulnerable populations. There is hope that heightened awareness and proactive safety practices can lead to a safer environment for all residents, especially for the elderly who have dedicated their lives to building their communities.

Such discussions are essential in fostering a supportive and caring community, aiming to ensure that senior citizens can enjoy their later years free from fear and violence, and are able to live with dignity and safety in their own homes.
