In response to a distressing event at an ATM in Suva, the Fiji Disabled People’s Federation (FDPF) is calling for increased empathy and inclusive measures to better protect elderly and disabled individuals requiring essential services. The organization raised alarm after an elderly man was targeted, losing his bank card and pension funds while waiting for help at the ATM.
Fortunately, swift police action led to the arrest of a suspect and the recovery of items thought to belong to the victim, a development that the FDPF welcomed. However, the federation highlighted that this incident reveals a wider issue of vulnerability faced by elderly individuals in public spaces.
FDPF stated, “This incident is a stark reminder that elder abuse is not always hidden — it can happen in broad daylight, in public places, and through acts of deception.” They stressed the importance of society doing more to protect elder individuals, uphold their dignity, and ensure their safety when accessing necessary services.
Elderly persons, particularly those living with disabilities, mobility challenges, or cognitive impairments, often depend on others to access banking and other services. The federation voiced that this reliance should not be taken advantage of.
Moreover, the federation praised the compassion shown by members of the public who intervened to assist the elderly man, underscoring that community solidarity can play a crucial role in safeguarding vulnerable populations.
This incident serves not only as a wake-up call but also as a reminder of the collective responsibility communities hold in fostering a safe and supportive environment for all, particularly for those most at risk.
