Niraj Surend Prasad has been ordered to remain in custody following his appearance in the Suva Magistrates Court regarding an alleged theft involving an elderly victim. Prasad faces a charge of theft connected to the ATM card of 86-year-old Malakai Kauwale, with the incident reportedly occurring on January 5, 2026, in Suva.
During the hearing, Police prosecutor Sergeant Salote Bola opposed bail, citing Prasad’s two prior theft convictions and an ongoing matter related to absconding from bail previously. The prosecution argued that these factors posed a significant risk concerning Prasad’s compliance with any potential bail conditions.
The case was heard before Magistrate Charles Ratakele in Court Four, where Prasad chose to waive his right to legal representation. After considering the circumstances, Magistrate Ratakele remanded Prasad in custody and scheduled the next court date for January 12, allowing him time to submit a formal bail application.
Prasad will remain detained until his next appearance, as the prosecution continues to assess the implications of the recent allegations against him. This case highlights ongoing concerns related to theft, particularly against vulnerable populations such as the elderly. As proceedings unfold, the focus remains on the judicial process and ensuring justice for the victims involved.
