An investigation into allegations of police officers colluding with a drug trade network has intensified, with eight officers now under scrutiny. The inquiry has gained the interest of both the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and New Zealand Police (NZP), focusing on a series of communications believed to have been initiated by an overseas individual through the messaging platform Viber.
Fiji’s Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, confirmed the involvement of the eight officers in a recent statement, describing the situation as serious. “Our Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has analyzed the posts, and the evidence has led us to believe that these officers are involved. We have seized all their phones to conduct a digital forensic analysis,” Commissioner Tudravu reported.
The participation of international law enforcement agencies is crucial to the ongoing investigation. Commissioned by the premise that the individual behind the Viber communications is based overseas, both the AFP and NZP have joined forces to help gather further evidence and intelligence. Additionally, authorities have reached out to the individual who first shared the screenshots that sparked the investigation, with plans underway to secure a formal statement from her. This could provide deeper insight into the officers’ alleged involvement in illicit activities.
Commissioner Tudravu emphasized the urgency of the investigation, assuring the public that updates will be provided regularly. He underlined the importance of restoring public trust, highlighting that any officers found guilty of misconduct will face significant consequences. “These officers are entrusted with the responsibility of upholding the law, and if these allegations are proven true, they will be held accountable,” he asserted firmly.
As the investigation progresses, it holds the promise of accountability and transparency within the police force, reinforcing the commitment to upholding the law and ensuring that justice prevails.
