As Eid draws near, the Consumer Council is urging shoppers in Fiji to remain vigilant against price gouging, misleading promotions, and expired products in preparation for the festivities. These concerns have historically overshadowed holiday shopping experiences and could potentially dampen the celebratory spirit for many families this year.
Rising inflation on essential goods, particularly ghee, dairy, and meat, is troubling as vendors often exploit heightened demand during this busy season to unjustly raise prices. Notably, there have been significant increases in the price of ghee, which holds a special place in festive cooking. This issue echoes similar complaints during past holidays, such as Diwali, where consumers faced price hikes on staple goods.
Additionally, there is a prevalent issue of misleading advertising, wherein retailers promote discounts that do not apply to the final prices consumers see at checkout. A recent example involved a perfume that was advertised at a lower price but turned out to be more expensive when customers attempted to purchase it.
Food safety remains a major concern, highlighted by alarming reports of expired products, including instances where supermarket items like Samai were found to have visible mold. Consumers are being encouraged to thoroughly inspect all food items to ensure their safety before buying.
Caterers have also come under fire for failing to meet orders and delivering stale sweets, which could mar the festive experience for many.
With an increase in online shopping for Eid necessities, consumers are advised to check the legitimacy of online sellers to avoid scams and unreliable sources.
Seema Shandil, CEO of the Consumer Council, emphasizes that while Eid is a time for happiness, it is crucial to be cautious to avoid falling victim to inflated prices and subpar products. She advises consumers to carefully monitor prices, inspect goods, and keep receipts to facilitate any necessary complaints.
The Council is committed to addressing dishonest trading practices and encourages consumers to report any issues they encounter. This proactive approach aims to safeguard shoppers and uphold the joyous spirit of Eid celebrations.
