As Eid approaches, the Consumer Council is cautioning shoppers to be on guard against price gouging, misleading advertisements, and expired products as they prepare for the festivities. These issues have tarnished holiday shopping experiences in prior years, which could potentially dampen the celebrations for many Fijians.
Inflation on essential items like ghee, dairy, and meat is a major concern, as retailers often leverage the increased demand during this busy period to inflate prices unfairly. For instance, there have been reports of significant price hikes on ghee, a staple for festive cooking, which mirrors similar complaints noted during holidays such as Diwali in previous years.
Misleading advertisements are another issue, with some retailers advertising discounts that do not reflect the actual prices at checkout. A recent report highlighted a case where a perfume was marketed at a discounted price but was found to be higher when customers reached the store.
Food safety also remains a significant matter, with alarming reports of expired or spoiled food items, such as Samai found with visible fungus in supermarkets. Consumers are advised to meticulously inspect all food products before purchase, ensuring they are safe for consumption.
Caterers, too, are under scrutiny as complaints have emerged regarding failure to fulfill orders and the delivery of stale sweets, which can spoil the joy of the occasion.
With the rise of online shopping for festive treats, consumers are urged to verify the credibility of online sellers to avoid scams and purchase from unreliable sources.
Seema Shandil, CEO of the Consumer Council, emphasizes the need for vigilance during Eid, stating it is a time for joy, but caution is paramount to prevent price gouging and the purchase of low-quality items. Shandil urges consumers to thoroughly check prices, inspect goods carefully, and retain receipts to address any complaints that might arise.
The Council pledges to take action against dishonest trading practices, urging consumers who encounter such issues to report them. This proactive stance aims not only to protect consumers but also to maintain the spirit of Eid celebrations untainted by unscrupulous practices.
In these challenging times, the Council’s initiatives remind consumers of the importance of awareness, ensuring that Eid remains a joyful and fulfilling celebration.
