Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) has appointed Fatiaki Gibson as its new Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Hasmukh Patel, who is retiring after a lengthy tenure of 17 years. EFL Chair Rokoseru Nabalarua highlighted that this leadership change comes at a pivotal moment for the company as it aims to transition to 90% renewable energy by the year 2035.
Gibson brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having dedicated 34 years to the energy sector, including significant positions in energy project development and a notable tenure of 26 years at the Fiji Electricity Authority, which has since been rebranded as EFL. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to enhance the company’s sustainability goals, particularly in promoting renewable energy sources.
In his plans as CEO, Gibson emphasized the importance of expanding solar energy capacity as a priority. He stated, “We have set a new direction for energy feasibility, and that is to develop 165 megawatts of solar in the next four years.” Additionally, he noted long-term aspirations to incorporate hydro and geothermal energy into Fiji’s energy mix, with a focus on conducting further feasibility studies for these resources.
Gibson also acknowledged the ongoing need for fossil fuel investments as the nation increases its renewable energy capacities, stating, “I’m looking forward to this new role to help EFL develop the energy sources and infrastructure we need. Energy is very important for the country’s economic development.”
Under Gibson’s leadership, EFL is poised to push significant renewable projects forward, drawing on his extensive background in the industry, which includes overseeing the successful commissioning of the Nadarivatu Hydroelectric Scheme in 2012. With a collaborative approach, he intends to work closely with stakeholders and government agencies to modernize energy infrastructures and enhance grid resilience across Fiji.
Gibson’s previous involvement in consulting for projects like the Vanuatu Energy Access Programme, where he played an integral role in enhancing energy access for various communities, showcases his commitment to driving better energy solutions. His leadership is expected to foster a culture of innovation and sustainability at EFL, reinforcing the company’s role as a leader in the renewable energy sector in the Pacific region.
The anticipation surrounding Gibson’s leadership marks an optimistic future for Energy Fiji Limited. His expertise and vision are expected to be critical in achieving ambitious sustainable energy initiatives, ultimately benefiting communities and supporting Fiji’s economic development.
