EFL’s Green Future: Namosi Hydro Study Takes Shape

Energy Fiji Ltd (EFL) has outlined its ongoing efforts related to the proposed feasibility study for a hydro-electric project in Namosi. Acting CEO Bobby Naimawi announced that EFL aims to supply clean and affordable energy solutions to Fiji, targeting at least 90 percent of the country’s energy needs to be met by renewable sources by 2035.

To reach this goal, EFL is collaborating with various international development partners to identify and develop sustainable and economically viable projects. The Namosi hydro-electric scheme is one such initiative currently under review.

Initial assessments indicate that several small hydro-electric schemes can potentially be established in the Namosi region, building on previous investigations conducted by EFL. The feasibility study will outline the next steps for the organization.

The study focuses on three potential hydro-power sites in Namosi, along with the corresponding high-voltage power transmission infrastructure needed to connect to larger electricity demand centers. It will evaluate the technical feasibility, commercial viability, and the environmental and social impacts of the proposed hydro-power facilities and their power evacuation infrastructure.

Commenced in 2023, the feasibility study is projected to take two years to complete.
