EFL’s Bold Move Towards Sustainable Energy: What’s in the Namosi Hydro-Project?

Energy Fiji Ltd (EFL) has outlined its ongoing efforts regarding the proposed feasibility study for a hydro-electric project in Namosi. In a recent statement, acting CEO Bobby Naimawi emphasized a goal to deliver clean and affordable energy solutions to Fiji, aiming to source at least 90 percent of the country’s energy needs from renewable resources by 2035.

To meet this ambitious objective, EFL, with the assistance of several international development partners, is focused on identifying and developing sustainable and economically feasible projects. The Namosi hydro-electric scheme is one such initiative currently undergoing investigation, with EFL conducting a feasibility study to assess its potential.

Naimawi noted that preliminary investigations indicated the feasibility of several small hydro-electric projects in the Namosi region, and EFL is building upon these findings. The outcome of the feasibility study will guide EFL’s future actions.

This study will evaluate three potential hydro-power sites in Namosi, along with the necessary high-voltage power evacuation infrastructure to connect to larger electricity demand centers. The analysis will cover the technical feasibility, commercial viability, as well as the environmental and social impacts associated with the potential hydro-power facilities and their infrastructure.

The feasibility study began this year and is anticipated to take around two years to complete.
