EFL’s Bold Move Towards Renewable Energy: The Namosi Hydro-Electric Feasibility Study

Energy Fiji Ltd (EFL) has outlined the ongoing efforts related to the proposed feasibility study for the Namosi hydroelectric project. In a recent statement, acting Chief Executive Officer Bobby Naimawi mentioned a goal of achieving clean and affordable energy solutions for Fiji, aiming for at least 90 percent of the country’s energy needs to be met through renewable sources by 2035.

To reach this ambitious objective, EFL, in collaboration with various international development partners, is focused on identifying and advancing several sustainable and economically viable projects. The Namosi hydroelectric scheme is one of these initiatives currently under examination.

Naimawi noted that preliminary investigations have indicated the potential for several small hydroelectric schemes in the Namosi region, and EFL plans to build upon these earlier findings. The outcomes of the feasibility study will determine EFL’s subsequent steps.

The feasibility study is evaluating three sites for hydro power potential in Namosi, along with the necessary high-voltage infrastructure for transporting electricity from Namosi to larger consumption areas. This study will examine the technical feasibility, commercial viability, and the environmental and social impacts of the proposed hydro power facilities and power evacuation infrastructure.

The feasibility study commenced earlier this year and is anticipated to be completed within two years.
