The Ministry of Environment has issued a prohibition notice to Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) following an investigation concerning an oil discharge at their Sigatoka Pump Station. Residents from nearby villages, particularly Vunavutu and Nasama, raised alarms, prompting immediate inspections that confirmed the discharge originated from EFL’s facility.

Investigations conducted by environmental inspectors involved the collection of samples, which indicated that the spilled material was waste oil. In response to the findings, EFL has been directed to remove any remaining lubricant oil from the soil surrounding their operational boundaries to prevent further contamination of local waterways. The Ministry has emphasized that all operations causing the oil discharge must be halted, with the prohibition notice remaining in effect until EFL implements sufficient containment measures.

This incident has sparked considerable concern within local communities, as many rely on the river for their daily needs. Similar past pollution events involving EFL have led residents to question the effectiveness of the company’s initial responses to environmental emergencies.

The active involvement of the Ministry highlights the importance of protecting natural resources in Fiji. Community vigilance plays a crucial role in reporting environmental threats, and the collaboration between government and residents underscores the significance of maintaining ecological integrity and public health.

As efforts to address this situation advance, there is hope that continued community engagement and proactive governmental actions will lead to the restoration of ecological balance, fostering a healthier environment for both present and future generations.
