A total of 395 teachers in Fiji who have recently enhanced their qualifications are set to receive an initial 50 percent payment for their salary upgrades soon, with the remaining amount to be disbursed in January next year. This announcement was made by Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro during the inaugural Fiji Teachers Registration Authority and Ministry of Education congress held at Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Nadi.
Additionally, 103 assistant principals will experience a salary increase, distinguishing them from heads of departments. Minister Radrodro emphasized the importance of these incentives in recognizing the dedication of teachers and ensuring that their professional skills are retained to foster development within the education sector.
Radrodro underlined the unique and significant role teachers play, urging them to seize this opportunity. He stated, “This is your season, this is your time. Make good use of it!” The conference offered a platform for educators across various roles—ranging from heads of departments to school managers—to gather, share experiences, and collaborate on emerging educational issues.
The conference theme, “Transforming Education: Closing Gaps, Connecting Minds, Shaping Tomorrow,” reflects a collective commitment among the Ministry of Education, the Fiji Teachers Registration Authority, and all educational stakeholders to enhance Fiji’s educational landscape.
Radrodro also called on educators to not only focus on knowledge transmission but also on influencing student character, quoting Martin Luther King Jr. to highlight the dual goals of education in fostering both intelligence and character. He stressed the pressing issue of literacy and numeracy, reminding attendees that many students enter secondary school without essential reading and writing skills.
To address these educational challenges, he encouraged educators to explore alternative curriculums and training programs that support students facing learning barriers, such as autism or behavioral challenges. “We must work together to ensure that every student is given the opportunity to thrive and succeed,” Radrodro stated, emphasizing collaboration for improved educational outcomes.
This initiative not only acknowledges the hard work of teachers but also inspires a unified approach to enhancing and transforming education in Fiji, promising a brighter future for both educators and students alike.
