The Ministry of Education has announced that it will reinstate interviews for Year 13 students applying for teacher training institutions across Fiji’s four divisions. This initiative will be executed in partnership with various educational bodies, including Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs), the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA), the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS).

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro described this initiative as an exciting opportunity for Year 13 graduates aspiring to join the teaching profession, emphasizing the vital role teachers play in shaping the future of education in Fiji. He acknowledged the increasing demand for qualified educators and noted that the new interview process aims to attract candidates who are both qualified and passionate about teaching.

This move arises from the 2024-2033 Denarau Declaration, which seeks to enhance collaboration among educational stakeholders to ensure that graduates are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary for effective teaching. Radrodro reiterated the ministry’s commitment to fostering a vibrant educational environment, stating that dedicated teachers are essential to ensuring a positive impact on students throughout the country.

He also highlighted several priority teaching areas currently facing shortages, including primary education, special and inclusive education, and subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science, among others. The deadline for online applications to TSLS is set for January 31, 2025.

Two rounds of interviews will be conducted in collaboration with TTIs, and eligible students will be informed about the interview dates and locations via email and phone notifications.

This initiative signals a proactive step towards improving educational quality in Fiji by selecting passionate and skilled future educators, which is crucial for the growth and development of the education system.
