Yasawa North Secondary School has achieved an impressive milestone by recording a 100 percent pass rate among its Year 12 students. Principal Tomasi Lakeba attributes this success to a holistic approach that emphasizes teacher attendance, student discipline, and active parental engagement.

Lakeba pointed out that minimizing teacher absenteeism directly influences student performance, leading him to assign two teachers to key subjects like English—one focusing on literature and the other on language. This strategy ensures that students always have a teacher available, enhancing the learning environment.

Monitoring teacher effectiveness was also critical. The school conducts trial exams at the beginning of Term 3 to assess areas needing improvement. Lakeba encourages teachers to analyze any decline in student performance, inviting them to devise strategies that will be implemented to help students excel by the final examinations.

Additionally, Yasawa North Secondary School has implemented an Enrichment Literacy and Numeracy Intervention program focused on strengthening students’ literacy and numeracy skills. Lakeba noted that adapting the curriculum to allocate more time based on performance—70 percent literature and 30 percent language—has proven to be beneficial in English language instruction.

The principal aims to expand this tailored approach to other subjects in the coming academic year. This methodology not only prepares students for immediate success but also builds a strong foundation for their future educational endeavors.

The achievement of Yasawa North Secondary School conveys a hopeful message about the results of strategic educational planning, reinforcing the idea that with commitment and collaborative efforts among students, teachers, and parents, academic achievements can flourish. This positive outcome reflects broader trends in Fiji’s educational landscape, where dedication to improvement continues to shape students’ futures.
