The Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, has taken decisive action by issuing a strong warning to heads of schools that have been underperforming, particularly those categorized as ‘Hope’ schools. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Ministry to tackle the pressing challenges within the education system.
During a statement made to Parliament on Monday, Mr. Radrodro announced that these underperforming schools would undergo strict oversight in the upcoming years, as part of efforts to enhance Year 8 student results. He emphasized the importance of accountability among school leaders, signaling that a specific circular has been distributed to these institutions.
While Mr. Radrodro did not disclose how many schools are being closely monitored, he referenced concerning national outcomes for Year 8 students this year. He highlighted that the national pass rates in critical subjects such as English and Mathematics have been troubling, with only 57 percent passing in English and a mere 41 percent in Mathematics over the past three years.
In his commitment to addressing these educational shortcomings, Mr. Radrodro noted that the Ministry is actively reviewing both the content being taught and the structure of the Mathematics assessment to provide better support for students. He assured Parliament that a thorough curriculum review is ongoing, with aims to align it more closely with the needs of the 21st century, fostering essential skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving.
Additionally, he pointed out a positive trend: an increase in Year 9 enrolment, attributed to the $200 Back to School assistance initiative. Mr. Radrodro also emphasized the Ministry’s dedication to reaching out to students in maritime and remote rural schools, ensuring equal educational opportunities for all, regardless of location. He urged parents or guardians experiencing challenges with student enrolment to reach out to district offices for assistance.
In summary, the Minister’s proactive measures reflect a commitment to improving the education system in Fiji, aiming for enhanced student outcomes and greater equity in educational access. This focus on accountability, curriculum development, and support for underserved areas signifies a hopeful future for education in the nation.
