Deputy Secretary for Primary and Secondary Education in the Ministry of Education, Timoci Bure, has defended the recent decision to terminate four Human Resource officers, stating that it followed a comprehensive evaluation process aimed at upholding the integrity and effectiveness of the Ministry’s operations. He rejected allegations of misconduct against Minister Aseri Radrodro, including claims of interference in disciplinary matters and unlawful terminations.

Bure asserted that the terminations were based on a thorough assessment of the officers’ performance and compliance with Ministry policies, and emphasized that these actions were not retaliatory. He noted that the former HR officers had been reinstated during Radrodro’s temporary absence and were later evaluated upon his return. According to Bure, the ongoing legal battle regarding the dismissals reflects the Ministry’s commitment to respect due process, as the officers have contested their terminations in court.

“This decision was made to ensure adherence to established protocols, including the Employment Relations Act 2007 and the Constitution of Fiji 2013,” Bure clarified. He reiterated the Ministry’s intention to maintain transparent and competitive recruitment practices, addressing allegations that a staff member was improperly brought into the Ministry from Parliament without following the correct protocols.

The situation has garnered attention not only for its immediate implications but also for its potential impact on governance within the Education Ministry. This incident underscores the importance of accountability and due process in public service, fostering a culture of transparency that is crucial for public trust.

As the legal proceedings develop, there is hope that they will reinforce commitments to fair employment practices within governmental institutions and address the concerns raised by the affected parties, ultimately benefitting the broader educational landscape.
