Education Ministry Turns Up the Heat on Corruption in Schools

The Ministry of Education has turned over cases of fund misappropriation within schools to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

These cases pertain to schools that received funding for specific projects but failed to provide receipts, with some projects either incomplete or never initiated. Ilisoni Waqa, the Principal Education Officer for the Ministry’s Assets and Infrastructure Services, shared this information.

“We have referred cases for audit, and FICAC is currently conducting interviews and requesting documentation. We are aiding them by supplying the necessary evidence for their investigations and to address these unresolved matters,” Mr. Waqa stated.

When inquired about the number of schools involved in the referrals, he mentioned, “I don’t have the numbers with me, but I will get back to you.” He refrained from offering additional details regarding the specific schools.

In a related case at Nasoki Village, there was a call for assistance to finish a double-storey classroom. Mr. Waqa confirmed that help was provided, but the school could not submit the required receipts.

He stressed the necessity of judicious use of government funds and the importance of proper documentation. “When funds are allocated to schools, we expect them to be utilized for their intended purpose. Schools that maintain accurate records are more likely to receive funding for future projects,” he stated. He urged schools to keep comprehensive records of receipts for any funds used for projects.
