The Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, has issued a firm warning to school leaders, particularly those managing institutions categorized as ‘Hope’ schools, which have been persistently underperforming. This initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy by the Ministry to tackle significant challenges within the education system.

During a recent statement to Parliament, Mr. Radrodro announced that strict monitoring will be implemented for these schools in an effort to boost Year 8 student performance. “We are closely monitoring heads of schools whose institutions fall under the Hope school category, which have consistently underperformed over the past three years,” he stated. The Minister emphasized the importance of accountability among school leaders to drive improvements.

While the exact number of schools being monitored was not disclosed, concern has grown due to the disappointing Year 8 results nationwide this year. Mr. Radrodro addressed the alarming pass rates in key subjects, revealing that English has maintained a pass rate of 57 percent and Mathematics a lower 41 percent over the past three years. He pledged that the Ministry is dedicated to enhancing these areas.

Efforts are underway to review both the teaching materials and the structure of Mathematics assessments to better support student understanding. Additionally, a thorough evaluation of the curriculum is in progress, aiming to align it with the requirements of the 21st century and to nurture critical thinking and problem-solving abilities in students.

With a steady increase in Year 9 enrolment, which has been partially attributed to the $200 Back to School assistance, Mr. Radrodro noted that the Ministry is examining the promotion of students in recent years without sufficient oversight. Furthermore, he reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to improving outreach to maritime and remote rural schools, ensuring that students in these regions have equal opportunities for success as their urban counterparts. He encouraged parents or guardians facing challenges with school enrollment to reach out to district offices for support.

This initiative reflects a strong commitment to enhancing the educational landscape and ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, have access to quality education. By focusing on accountability, curriculum development, and providing support to remote areas, the Ministry is working diligently to create a brighter future for Fiji’s youth.
