Education Minister’s Bold Move: Will Underperforming Schools Turn the Tide?

Minister of Education Aseri Radrodro has issued a strong warning to school leaders of institutions categorized as ‘Hope’ schools, which have consistently underperformed. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Ministry to tackle persistent challenges within the education sector.

During a statement in Parliament on Monday, Mr. Radrodro indicated that these schools will be closely monitored in the upcoming years as the Ministry focuses on enhancing the Year 8 student results. “We are carefully observing the heads of schools under the Hope school category, which have not met performance expectations over the past three years,” he noted. A circular addressing these concerns has been distributed, emphasizing the need for accountability among school leaders.

Although the exact number of schools facing scrutiny was not disclosed, the Minister’s remarks come in light of disappointing Year 8 results nationwide this year. Specifically, he highlighted the troubling pass rates in English and Mathematics, with English achieving only a 57 percent pass rate and Mathematics falling significantly lower at 41 percent. “We are diligently working to enhance our performance in these subjects,” Mr. Radrodro affirmed.

To support student success, the Ministry is currently reviewing both the teaching materials and the structure of the Mathematics curriculum. A comprehensive evaluation of the curriculum is in progress, aimed at aligning it with 21st-century demands while promoting critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities. “Our commitment is to equip our students with essential skills to navigate an ever-changing world,” he stated.

The Minister also addressed concerns regarding automatic progression of students in recent years, acknowledging a lack of sufficient monitoring in this area. He noted a gradual increase in Year 9 enrollment, attributing this to the $200 Back to School assistance initiative.

Additionally, Mr. Radrodro emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to improving outreach efforts to maritime and remote rural schools, ensuring that students in these locations receive equal opportunities as their urban counterparts. Parents facing challenges with enrollment are encouraged to contact the Ministry’s district offices for assistance.
