Matelita Nagatalevu of Vutia, Rewa, celebrated her graduation today with a Bachelor of Education in Secondary, specializing in English and Geography. This achievement holds deep emotional significance for her, particularly after a challenging year marked by personal loss and immense sacrifice.
Reflecting on her journey, Nagatalevu described the experience of receiving her degree as overwhelming. She faced a series of hardships, particularly in February, when she lost her father, and her mother relocated overseas, leaving her with just her siblings for support. “It’s God all over – nothing else,” she expressed, crediting her faith as a cornerstone of her resilience.
Her pursuit of education has also been physically demanding. Nagatalevu undertook long commutes between Vatukoula, Lautoka, and Nadi, all while leaving her young son and husband behind. She recounted how adapting to a new educational environment was a significant challenge but remained grateful for the support that allowed her to persist. “My son is my motivation. He keeps me going every day,” she noted.
Family played a crucial role in her success, as her in-laws and relatives provided necessary support, enabling her to balance motherhood with her academic ambitions. She dedicated her achievement to her parents, siblings, in-laws, friends, and her extended family in Kadavu and Rewa, emphasizing, “This is for all of them, for supporting me spiritually and emotionally.”
Nagatalevu’s heartfelt message to aspiring students is both simple and powerful: “Education has no limits. Don’t let age stop you. Just keep on keeping on.” Her journey serves as an inspiring reminder of the strength of family, faith, and perseverance in the pursuit of education.
