Ba Province is facing a significant educational crisis, with over 21,000 school-aged children currently not enrolled in schools. This alarming statistic was highlighted by Ratu Meli Tora, the chairman of the Ba Provincial Council, during the launch of a new educational empowerment initiative in Lautoka. He emphasized that this situation reflects lost potential and interrupted dreams for many children.

Recent figures indicate that the number of unregistered children has increased from 18,271 in 2019. Ratu Meli connected this rise to various factors, such as the migration from rural to urban areas, economic difficulties, and family issues. He noted the particular difficulties faced by young women, including early pregnancies and domestic responsibilities, which hinder their access to education.

Ratu Meli addressed enumerators training for the Soqosoqo Vakamarama iTaukei ni Yasana Ko Ba’s educational empowerment project. He stressed the importance of confronting the reality that thousands of young children are disconnecting from education, blocking their chances for a prosperous future. He pointed out the complex reasons behind this crisis, notably the lack of vocational training and socio-economic pressures.

The initiative, supported by partnerships with Fiji National University, Fiji Bureau of Statistics, and Brot für die Welt, aims to train enumerators who will collect data on school dropouts in designated areas. This data will be pivotal in shaping the Empowerment through Education project, aimed at addressing and resolving these educational challenges.

This situation serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for community involvement and policy intervention in education. It is hopeful that initiatives like the one launched in Ba Province can pave the way for a brighter educational future, supporting children in overcoming barriers and achieving their full potential. Investing in education now can lead to transformational changes for the entire community, fostering resilience and empowerment for future generations.
