The education crisis in Ba Province is intensifying, with over 21,000 school-aged children currently not enrolled in school, as reported by Ba Provincial Council chairman Ratu Meli Tora. This alarming figure, revealed during the launch of an educational empowerment initiative in Lautoka, highlights a growing issue of lost potential and unmet aspirations among youth in the region.
Ratu Meli noted that the number of out-of-school children has surged based on recent 2023 data, which exceeds figures from a 2019 village profiling report that indicated 18,271 children were not attending school at that time. He identified several factors contributing to this situation, including rural-to-urban migration, economic difficulties, and family instability. Particularly concerning is the additional struggle faced by young women, who often encounter barriers such as early pregnancies and domestic responsibilities.
During his remarks at a training session for enumerators involved in the Soqosoqo Vakamarama iTaukei ni Yasana Ko Ba’s (SSViT) educational initiative, Ratu Meli emphasized the real-life implications of these statistics. He described them as reflecting the disrupted dreams and potential of countless children who are now disconnected from essential educational opportunities.
He pointed out that the links between education and social issues such as teenage substance abuse underscore the critical need for adequate educational support, as students who struggle academically are more likely to engage in harmful behaviors.
In collaboration with the Fiji National University, the Fiji Bureau of Statistics, and the funding organization Brot für die Welt, the SSViT program is equipping enumerators aged 18 to 19 with the skills needed to gather vital data on school dropouts within the province. This initiative aims to enhance the understanding of the educational landscape and will aid in the future implementation of an Empowerment through Education project.
This situation presents a significant challenge, yet it also highlights the proactive steps being taken to address the educational needs in Ba Province.
