The Ministry of Transport, in collaboration with road safety agencies, is intensifying its efforts to tackle road accidents, especially during the festive season when incidents tend to surge. Assistant Minister for Transport Naisa Tuinaceva has outlined that the primary causes of these accidents have been identified, making education and enforcement critical focal points in their strategy.
Tuinaceva stated that the Land Transport Authority will prioritize educating drivers about road laws, safe driving practices, and the importance of valuing life. He emphasized that a change in driver behavior and a sense of responsibility on the road are essential. “To some, this is something that they have the vehicles at home and need to drive. But teaching them the right way, habits, attitude, and behavior, and guiding them to become safe drivers on the road — these are the things we need to work on,” he remarked.
The Assistant Minister also noted that each road accident is being carefully reviewed, identifying speeding, drunk driving, and vehicle defects as among the leading causes. The Transport Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau highlighted that nearly 80 percent of accidents are associated with speeding, reckless driving, and licensing issues. He called for urgent reforms and a coordinated approach to enhance road safety, stating, “On these issues, as we move forward, this also includes the current review of the regulations and the Act, particularly the penalties and the methodologies for issuing licenses.”
The proactive measures being undertaken signal a positive direction towards improving road safety and minimizing accidents, thereby fostering a safer driving environment for all road users during this busy time of year.
