Opposition Member of Parliament, Premila Kumar, has publicly denounced the current government’s economic strategies, claiming they primarily benefit a limited segment of the population. During her address in Parliament, Kumar emphasized that the everyday lives of ordinary Fijians have not been enhanced; instead, they are facing soaring living costs, turning essential goods and services into unaffordable luxuries.
Kumar highlighted the tough decisions families must make as they juggle between purchasing medicine and food or paying rent and electricity bills. Despite these challenges, the government maintains that the economy is strong, leaving Kumar to question the reality of this assertion. She queried, “If this is true, where is the impact? Who is benefiting?” pointing out that hardworking farmers struggle with increasing costs, while professionals such as nurses and teachers seek better opportunities abroad. Small business owners also find it increasingly difficult to stay afloat.
She expressed skepticism about the government’s claims of economic growth, questioning for whom this growth is intended — whether it truly benefits the many or just a privileged few, including multinational corporations and elite individuals. Kumar argued that while the government celebrates growth, the majority of people face hardship and are left behind.
Kumar stated that the government prioritizes statistical data over the needs of its citizens, insisting that Fijians deserve comprehensive policies that uplift everyone, not just the affluent. She urged for crucial modifications, such as lowering the VAT on essential items to alleviate the financial strain on families, offering more support to small businesses which are vital to the economy, and creating genuine job opportunities to retain skilled workers.
“Real success is measured not by statistics but by the well-being and dignity of our people,” Kumar asserted, stressing that numerous promises made by the government remain unfulfilled while poverty continues to rise.
In summary, Kumar’s criticisms bring to light pressing concerns regarding economic disparity and the tangible impacts of government policies on everyday Fijians. There may be hope for change as these discussions encourage a reevaluation of economic priorities that could ultimately lead to more equitable growth and improved living conditions for all citizens. This type of scrutiny is crucial for a responsive governance approach that truly addresses the needs of its people.
