Opposition MP Premila Kumar has recently responded to claims made by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica regarding economic mismanagement under the previous FijiFirst Government. Kumar asserts that if the government believes there is evidence of mismanagement, it should pursue legal action instead of issuing vague allegations. She criticized Kamikamica’s comments as “tired excuses” and emphasized that these remain just allegations.

Kumar pointed out that during the FijiFirst’s tenure, the economy experienced significant growth, with the GDP doubling from $6 billion to nearly $12 billion, and per capita income rising from $6,600 to over $13,000. She highlighted achievements such as a more than $3 billion increase in foreign reserves compared to $500 million in 2006 and a reduction in the poverty rate to 24.1 percent.

The Opposition MP challenged the current Coalition Government’s economic policies, questioning the recent VAT and corporate tax hikes, which she claims exacerbate existing economic challenges. Kumar argued that increasing taxes during high inflation is illogical, suggesting that such measures only worsen the cost of living crisis faced by many families in Fiji.

She expressed concerns over the Coalition Government’s increased ministerial appointments and lavish spending, questioning their commitment to reducing costs as promised during the election. Kumar urged the current government to take responsibility for its policies that, in her view, have elevated living costs and worsened the economic situation for ordinary Fijians.

This ongoing discussion between the opposition and the government highlights the stark contrasts in their economic narratives. It not only reflects the political tensions surrounding economic governance but also underscores the importance of accountability and effective strategies aimed at genuinely uplifting all Fijians amidst rising living costs and economic constraints. There remains hope that by thoroughly addressing these issues, Fiji can foster a more conducive economic environment that benefits its citizens collectively.
