A proposal worth $3.1 million aimed at enhancing eco-tourism in Macuata has not yet been presented to the Cabinet, as stated by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica. He pledged to follow up with the appropriate minister regarding its status.
Businesswoman Amelia Simmons highlighted that the Macuata Tourism Association has put forward this proposal, which seeks funding to improve popular attractions like the floating island and the three sisters. Simmons revealed that landowners had raised concerns about not benefiting from the influx of visitors to these sites. The proposed plan includes enhancing infrastructure, installing educational signage, improving guided tours, and providing training for landowners and local villagers to ensure they benefit directly from tourism.
The allure of these natural attractions has drawn interest from tourists in North America and Canada, which presents an opportunity for economic growth within the region. Additionally, Mr. Kamikamica indicated that funding could potentially be sourced from the World Bank to support the proposed upgrades.
This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts in the region to develop sustainable tourism and bolster local economies, as seen in other recent projects. For instance, a noteworthy initiative supported by the World Bank is currently focusing on enhancing sustainable tourism development in Vanua Levu. This project aims to upgrade infrastructure and involve private sector participation while promoting environmental sustainability.
Moreover, there have been several funding allocations in the region aimed at improving essential services and infrastructure, such as a $900,000 commitment toward drinking water projects in nearby villages, as well as a $100,000 funding boost for local businesses, including new hospitality services.
Collectively, these efforts indicate a concerted push towards revitalizing tourism in Macuata and its surroundings. By improving infrastructure and ensuring local communities can directly benefit from tourism, there is a hopeful outlook for sustainable economic growth in the area.
