In a remarkable showcase of cultural and environmental significance, Adi Marica Naceva Waqaniburotu, representing the Labasa Divisional Hospital, won the Best Sarong award during the Global Night at the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North.

The 22-year-old captivated the audience on Monday night at Subrail Park in Labasa with a sarong that transcended mere fashion, embodying a story of organic farming. The garment began with a stylish twist around her neck, signifying the initiation of a journey steeped in sustainable farming practices.

Adi Marica’s innovative presentation not only secured her the top prize but also highlighted the critical importance of sustainable agriculture in a visually engaging way. The attaché from the pathology department of the Labasa Divisional Hospital pointed out that the knot in her sarong represented a profound dedication to nurturing the environment and promoting sustainable farming practices.

“After a rewarding day at the farm, the sarong seamlessly transforms into an elegant beach outfit with a knot just below the bust,” she remarked. “It epitomizes relaxed sophistication, ideal for enjoying the coastal breeze.”

Her headpiece, crafted from leaves and vibrant flowers, symbolized the produce of her organic farm. Expressing her disbelief at winning the award, she admitted, “I was nearly in tears; all the other contestants had stunning sarongs.”

“This sarong was created by my sister and me, reflecting our sisterly unity and the fruits of our hard work,” she added.

Currently, she is a final-year student at Fiji National University, where she is studying for a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science. Originating from Makadru in Matuku, Lau, she has maternal ties to Taviya Village in Ovalau. Her advocacy focuses on revitalizing the North through organic farming practices.

“I’m passionate about organic farming as it lays the foundation for a healthier and more sustainable future,” she expressed.

Adi Marica is one of nine contestants competing for the Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North title, with the crowning event scheduled for Saturday.
