In Levuka, the iconic 199 steps of Mission Hill have stood the test of time, marking an important landmark in Fiji’s former capital. These weathered coral and limestone steps narrate a story interwoven with the town’s rich history.
During the mid-19th century, Levuka thrived as a bustling hub of opportunity, attracting missionaries, European traders, and settlers who influenced the coastal town’s future. It was in this lively environment that four Roman Catholic Marist Fathers arrived, eager to share their faith and educate the local communities on Ovalau island.
Recognizing the need for a dedicated place for worship and education, the missionaries selected Mission Hill for their activities. It is believed that the steps were constructed shortly after the establishment of the mission in 1858.
Local resident Luke Tikomaisiga, 71, shares anecdotes about the famous steps that have been passed down through generations. “The missionaries were determined and wanted a path that would resonate with their spiritual journey, thus they built the staircase of 199 steps,” he recalls.
Tikomaisiga elaborates on the significance of the steps, noting their origins in local materials and handcrafted construction as a testament to the skill and dedication of both missionaries and locals. “My grandfather told me these steps were more than just a passageway; they represented the challenging journey the missionaries undertook in their quest to spread the Gospel.”
Originally designed to provide access to the site of Fiji’s first Roman Catholic mission, these steps symbolize Levuka’s unique history. Even after the capital shifted to Suva in 1882, the steps have remained a poignant reminder of the early days of Christianity in the region.
Both locals and tourists climb the steps to enjoy stunning views of Levuka while also connecting with historical narratives. Market vendor Aloesi Raiviti emphasizes their cultural importance, saying, “They remind us of the town’s colonial past and its significant role in sharing the Gospel throughout Fiji and the Pacific.”
Over the years, the steps have witnessed pivotal moments in Levuka’s history, with generations climbing them to pay homage to the town’s origins. These steps have become a symbol of Levuka’s storied past, reflecting its colonial heritage and contemporary appeal.
Significant preservation efforts are underway to maintain the steps as part of Levuka’s historical legacy, ensuring their recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adjacent to the steps lie the remnants of the old Catholic mission and a small historic chapel.
