Easter Shopping Alert: Beware of Consumer Scams!

Easter Shopping Alert: Beware of Consumer Scams!

The Consumer Council of Fiji has issued a cautionary statement urging shoppers to remain vigilant during their Easter shopping. Chief Executive Seema Shandil highlighted the potential for consumer exploitation during festive periods, such as fake discounts and the sale of expired products.

Shandil observed a trend where complaints typically increase during holidays, as consumers often become targets of unethical practices including misleading pricing, aggressive marketing tactics, and scams in online shopping. In an effort to combat these issues, the Council has ramped up its monitoring and outreach activities, partnering with both consumers and retailers to promote fair trading practices.

The Council is dedicated to resolving complaints and ensuring that consumers are informed about product safety and fair pricing. Shandil encouraged the public to be alert and informed, suggesting that by doing so, they can contribute to a more joyous festive season.

Past reports from the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) have highlighted similar challenges during festive seasons, where concerns about price gouging and misleading promotions were prevalent. For instance, during the Christmas period, the FCCC conducted numerous inspections to identify violations and protect consumer rights.

As shoppers prepare for Easter, they are reminded of the importance of vigilance in ensuring a fulfilling and safe shopping experience. With collaborative efforts from monitoring bodies, the hope is to foster a festive atmosphere free from exploitation, allowing everyone to enjoy the season to the fullest.
