Over 50 street youths and vulnerable children in Lautoka and Nadi benefited from the recent “Easter on the Park” initiative, organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. This effort is part of a broader strategy aimed at expanding outreach to communities in need, providing essential services and support to those facing significant challenges.
According to Minister Jese Saukuru, 49 youths have already enrolled in life skills training programs, with many participants either securing employment or undergoing rehabilitation in safe homes. The program goes beyond just offering food and entertainment; it incorporates health screenings, counseling, vocational pathways, and spiritual mentorship. Faith-based organizations played a key role in offering emotional support through prayer sessions and inspirational guidance.
The “Easter on the Park” initiative builds upon the success of the “Christmas on the Park” program held in Suva last year, which also focused on providing structured support to marginalized youth. A notable outcome from this event is the formation of the Western Street Kids and Youth Club, a grassroots network that will serve as an ongoing platform for community support and integration.
Minister Saukuru reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering potential among these vulnerable individuals: “Your government sees you, and we will continue to stand by you.” Such initiatives not only address immediate needs but also aspire to inspire hope and positive change in the lives of participants.
Similar programs have been seen in the past, reflecting a consistent commitment to uplifting street-dwelling youths across Fiji. By promoting community engagement and skill development, these initiatives underscore a collective aspiration for a brighter future for at-risk young individuals, paving the way for a more inclusive society.
Overall, the collaborative efforts among various stakeholders, including local organizations and government agencies, highlight the transformative potential of these initiatives in fostering resilience and empowerment among Fiji’s youth.
