The National Fire Authority (NFA) swiftly responded to an early morning fire at a vacant building on Amy Street, Suva, just opposite the Colonial War Memorial Hospital morgue. The first alarm sounded at 4:24 AM, prompting immediate alerts that resulted in multiple fire trucks and crews arriving on the scene from Suva and surrounding areas, including Nakasi.
By 4:30 AM, the first fire truck was on-site. The situation was compounded by strong winds, which significantly accelerated the fire’s spread, especially given the building’s old wooden structure. Firefighters worked diligently to contain the blaze, utilizing all available resources, including multiple hose lines and tank supplies from the fire trucks, to prevent damage to neighboring properties.
Although the building was empty at the time, it sustained extensive damage, with an estimated 98% destruction. The NFA Chief Executive Puamau Sowane noted a preliminary damage estimate of around $100,000, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by fire hazards in the community. It echoes earlier fires reported, including a notable incident in Naidovi where a two-story building was completely destroyed, leading to losses estimated at $750,000. Both incidents highlight the importance of fire safety awareness and community preparedness.
As investigations into this latest fire continue, officials urge residents to remain vigilant about potential fire hazards in their homes and businesses. Quick responses by trained firefighters can make a significant difference in minimizing damage and potential injury, fostering a sense of safety in the community despite unfortunate incidents.
Community members are encouraged to engage in proactive safety measures and support one another during these challenging times, reinforcing the spirit of cooperation and resilience within the area.
