Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has announced that the Back-to-School Support payments for the 2025 academic year have been processed and distributed ahead of schedule. Originally set for January 15, the early payment allows families an additional two and a half weeks to prepare for the new school year, which starts on January 27, 2025.
The support program received a total of 208,673 applications, with 200,176 approved, resulting in a significant disbursement of $40.4 million. However, 8,313 applications remain on hold, pending the Year-12 exam results required for official enrollment in Year-13.
Each child is eligible for $200 in support, which aims to alleviate financial strains associated with necessary school expenses, including uniforms, shoes, bags, and stationery. Parents can access the funds through various digital platforms like MPAiSA and MyCASH, or by visiting Post Fiji outlets. For families in maritime areas, funds can be collected through local Post Fiji agencies by providing their child’s student ID for verification.
This initiative is part of the Coalition Government’s commitment to assist families, especially those with household incomes under $50,000. Historically, the Back-to-School Support program has benefitted around 200,000 students each year, totaling approximately $130 million in educational assistance.
The timely disbursement of these funds not only provides essential financial relief but also underscores the government’s efforts to promote educational preparedness. This initiative is a hopeful signal for families, ensuring children are well-equipped as they embark on a new academic journey filled with opportunities.
Furthermore, both the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education have expressed their gratitude for the support from school heads, teachers, and parents throughout the application process, highlighting the importance of community collaboration in ensuring educational success.
In summary, this early financial assistance aims to foster optimism among families, paving the way for students to embrace a new school year with confidence and readiness.
