Nasif Mohammed, an audiometrist from Hearing Aid Services in Australia, has emphasized the importance of ear health during his recent visit to Labasa Town, Fiji, where he screened 40 patients. His diverse patient range included individuals as young as four and as old as 80. During the screenings, Mohammed encountered numerous cases of ear health mismanagement, including perforated eardrums, ear infections, wax blockages, and other conditions that hinder proper ear function.
He highlighted a significant challenge in the region, noting that there is currently no audiometrist based in Northern Fiji, forcing patients seeking medical assistance to travel to Suva. Mohammed expressed hope that the Ministry of Health and Medical Services will facilitate the monthly presence of an ENT specialist in Labasa, allowing local patients to receive timely care.
A particularly poignant moment during his visit involved a female patient with hearing impairment who, after receiving support from a hearing aid, was visibly overcome with emotion as she experienced the joy of hearing for the first time. Additionally, he interacted with students at the Labasa School for Special Education, many of whom require urgent medical attention and hearing aids.
Reflecting on the necessity for greater awareness of ear health, Mohammed recalled previous efforts with the Lions Club Labasa to provide similar services before the pandemic. He envisioned future initiatives, such as fundraising efforts to assist children in need of overseas treatments, highlighting that a lack of hearing significantly impacts one’s ability to communicate and live a normal life.
The message is clear: ear health is crucial, and more initiatives are needed to ensure that individuals, particularly children, have access to necessary treatments and resources. By raising awareness and advocating for medical support in the community, there is hope for improved futures for those struggling with hearing impairments.
In summary, Nasif Mohammed’s visit to Labasa underscored the urgent need for awareness and support regarding ear health, particularly in underserved regions. His compassion for his patients and call for action present a hopeful path toward better healthcare solutions for residents.
