The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging the government to evaluate the possibility of expanding the e-ticketing market to incorporate additional service providers. Board Chair Inosi Kuridrani expressed that the current e-ticketing system is burdensome to the public and hampers enforcement efforts. He noted a recent incident where an LTA officer faced scrutiny while enforcing e-ticketing regulations, which underscores the challenges enforcement officers encounter.
Kuridrani emphasized the system’s deficiencies, indicating that they complicate users’ experiences when attempting to utilize the e-ticketing services. He has recommended to the government that introducing more competitors in the market could significantly enhance the system and the services provided to the public.
However, Communications Minister Manoa Kamikamica responded by indicating that the local market’s size restricts the feasibility of managing multiple e-ticketing service providers effectively. He mentioned that Vodafone had recently won a tender for the e-ticketing system, noting that in a larger market, having multiple operators would make more sense, but the current conditions limit that possibility.
The LTA hopes to see competition addressed in upcoming reviews of the e-ticketing system, as many challenges remain unresolved. This aligns with previous calls from the Consumer Council of Fiji for a thorough evaluation of the e-ticketing framework, where they pointed out significant issues that hinder the ease of use for the public, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly.
There is optimism in the air as various stakeholders, including the LTA, are working together to improve the accessibility and user experience of the e-ticketing system. Future enhancements could foster a more inclusive and efficient public transportation network, ultimately benefiting all commuters in Fiji. The attention to public feedback and the potential for system enhancements may lead to a more user-friendly transportation environment moving forward.
